Interview with Franchise Partner – Marci Day of Greater South Riverside, California

After 31 years of serving adults with disabilities—and as the mother of four, including one with Down syndrome—Marci Day knew she was being called to something more. Tired of long commutes and sedentary life, she began praying for a new opportunity. Her prayer was answered when she discovered Special Strong.

Tell me a bit about yourself – what does your background look like?

I’ve been working with adults with disabilities for over 30 years. My son Cooper, who has Down syndrome, has been my greatest teacher. Between my personal and professional life, I’ve built strong connections in this community. I’ve been involved in special needs sports, support groups, and advocacy. I also spent years commuting long hours for a job that although I love, it is time for change. I prayed for something that aligned with my faith and passions—and God delivered.

How did you end up here? Why did you pick Special Strong?

I wasn’t actively looking for anything new. But I had been praying for God to show me a path that would align with my heart and help me move—literally and spiritually. One day, I saw an ad for Special Strong on Facebook. I clicked it, scheduled a Zoom, and the more I learned, the more I felt this was what I’d been called to do. Once I found out it was faith-based, that sealed it for me.

Were there any concerns that you had going into this process?

Money, of course. Anytime you’re starting a new business, that’s going to be top of mind. I also worried about having enough trainers and locations to serve athletes reliably across my territory. But I trusted the process and leaned on the support around me.

From start to finish, what was the process like of becoming a franchisee?

I really appreciated the vetting process. It wasn’t just about whether I was ready—it was about making sure there was unity with my husband too. That meant a lot. We even prayed together during meetings, which was so powerful. Everyone I met—from Craig & Gerry to Daniel—was humble, gracious, and incredibly supportive.

During the process, what did you learn from talking with other franchisees?

That even though starting a franchise is scary, no one I spoke to regretted their decision. Every single one had deep respect for the leadership and the mission. That really reinforced my decision to say yes.

What would you tell someone else who is considering becoming a franchisee?

I’d pray with them and for them. I’d be honest—it’s not always going to be easy, but it’s worth it. My experience so far has been nothing but positive.

What were some of the most attractive components of the business model?

It’s faith-based. It’s family-oriented—not just for the athletes but also for the franchisees. The leadership listens and makes improvements based on feedback. There’s a real sense of unity here, and that’s rare in business.

What made you overcome your fears and say YES to Special Strong?

My husband. His faith in me has been incredible. Honestly, the support from him, my family, and friends reminded me that I’m capable—even when I doubt myself. I believe this is God’s calling for me. That song lyric—“He’s moving mountains I don’t even know need moving”—really resonates with me. That’s what this whole journey feels like.

What did you think about the start-up costs and fees with Special Strong?

Very generous. I feel so blessed with the territory I have. Compared to what it could’ve cost to start something on my own, this feels like an incredible opportunity.
