After a successful career in retail and restaurant leadership, Joe Pahnke knew he wanted more than just profit margins and operations manuals. He was looking for purpose—and found it in Special Strong.
Tell me a bit about yourself – what does your background look like?
For most of my career, I worked in retail and restaurant leadership. I’ve overseen everything from individual stores to multiple locations across large brands. Most recently, I helped lead operations for the largest franchisee of an educational company. That role gave me the chance to build teams, lead with strategy, and focus on relationships—all things I’m now bringing to this new chapter with Special Strong.
How did you end up here? Why did you pick Special Strong?
About four years ago, I started exploring franchise ownership as a way to bring more meaning into my life. At the time, the opportunity wasn’t quite right. But that desire to make a difference never left me. When I came across Special Strong, it was different. I could feel God’s hand in it. The mission, the people, the purpose—it all clicked.
Were there any concerns that you had going into this process?
Of course. Any time you step into something new, there are unknowns. But I kept coming back to this: if I want to be the change I want to see in the world, then this is the time to act. Special Strong gave me the confidence I needed to take that leap.
From start to finish, what was the process like of becoming a franchisee?
It was intentional and supportive. Every step had a purpose, and the leadership team made sure I had what I needed to make an informed and prayerful decision. I appreciated how thorough the onboarding process was and how aligned it stayed with the mission.
During the process, what did you learn from talking with other franchisees?
Hearing their stories solidified everything I already felt about Special Strong. Everyone I spoke to was so mission-focused. You could tell it wasn’t just a business for them—it was a calling.
What would you tell someone else who is considering becoming a franchisee?
This is more than a business. If you’re called to serve others and want to make a lasting impact, this could be exactly what you’re looking for. The model works, but more importantly, the heart behind it is strong and real.
What were some of the most attractive components of the business model?
The structure, training, and support were huge—but what really drew me in was how faith-based the organization is. That kind of alignment is rare in business these days.
What made you overcome your fears and say YES to Special Strong?
I felt peace about the decision. I’ve learned to listen when something aligns spiritually, and with Special Strong, I felt like God had been preparing me for this. I just needed to say yes.
What did you think about the start-up costs and fees with Special Strong?
They were reasonable—especially compared to other franchises I’d looked into. You’re investing in a turnkey system with ongoing support, and the potential for impact makes it more than worth it.
