John was diagnosed with autism at just three years old, back in 1997. From that moment, life became a path filled with challenges—learning how to communicate, process emotions, and make sense of a world that didn’t always make room for him.
His family fought hard to get him into schools that would truly see him. And while the road was rocky, there were moments of grace—times when people saw John for who he really was.
One of the most impactful people was Daniel Stein, founder of Special Strong.
In 2015, John’s family made a major move from California to McKinney, TX. John was 21 years old, and they believed a new opportunity in Plano would give him greater purpose. But what followed was one of the hardest years of their lives.
John couldn’t adjust. His mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. The program he had joined changed leadership and no longer supported him. John’s confidence crumbled. Depression and health issues followed.
Then in 2017, during an equine therapy class, John met Daniel.
From the very first conversation, Daniel showed understanding and genuine care. John, who often took a long time to trust others, immediately clicked with him.
Inspired by his brothers—two of whom served in the Army—John always wanted to grow into the strong man they were. Daniel gave him the chance to do just that.
Under Daniel’s mentorship, John flourished. He began working out regularly, interned at Special Strong, and joined Discovery Days. He helped other clients, pushed past his fears, and began building confidence.
His social skills grew. He even welcomed a new coach into his routine with no setbacks—a clear sign of the transformation within.
Today, John stands taller—not just physically, but emotionally. He has a renewed sense of purpose.
Special Strong didn’t just give John a place to train—it gave him his life back. And for his family, especially his mom, that is a gift beyond measure.
